Causes of night cramps

If you regularly have cramps at night, then it is worth considering whether everything is in order with health.

This problem is familiar to many – suddenly, in the middle of the night, you wake up from unbearable pain: a leg cramps. If you regularly have cramps at night, then it is worth considering whether everything is in order with health.

What is cramps?
Cramps, or spasm, is a contraction of the muscles that occurs involuntarily and suddenly. As a rule, he is accompanied by a strong, sharp pain. In most cases, the leg muscles spasm: thighs or feet, calves. During cramps muscle is tense.

Thigh cramp
Most often convulsions bother a person at night, during sleep.

Cramps – a very common phenomenon: about 80% of people experience these unpleasant, painful sensations. Most often, they suffer from older people, although convulsions torment young and even children.

Cramp in the calf at night: what are the reasons
In fact, they are very diverse.

• Lack of macronutrients
The most common cause of painful cramps in the gastrocnemius muscle is the lack of such elements as magnesium, calcium or potassium. This is due to the fact that these elements are involved in the conduct of the nerve impulse to the muscle, ensure its reduction. If, in addition, there is a deficiency of vitamins in the body, such as D and B, the risk of seizures increases. The deficiency of these mineral salts occurs when they are insufficiently ingested with food, poor absorption or enhanced removal from the body. The cause may be dehydration, taking medications that prevent the absorption of these minerals, severe stress, pregnancy, sweating, etc.

Calcium-containing foods
• Strong or prolonged muscle load
With significant loads, the content of adenosine triphosphate acid, which provides muscles with energy, decreases, and lactic acid is formed in the tissues. This violates the relaxation of muscle fibers, which leads to cramps.

• Pregnancy
Convulsions during childbirth are associated with the fact that the uterus enlarges and clamps the inferior vena cava, which supplies blood to the legs. In addition, during pregnancy, the consumption of mineral salts is growing: they are required by the growing fetus, are flushed out of the body along with vomiting and urine. As a result, their deficit is formed, which causes convulsions.

• Neurological pathologies
Spasms are symptoms of various neurological disorders: these are multiple sclerosis, osteochondrosis, myositis, various neuropathies.

• Other diseases
In some diseases, in particular endocrine, the threshold of muscle excitability decreases. As a result, their involuntary contraction occurs even with small impulses. This condition can also occur with severe fatigue, taking certain medications.

The cause of seizures may be flatfoot
Seizures can be caused by insufficient supply of muscle tissue with oxygen and nutrients. This is possible, for example, with varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, atherosclerosis obliterans, diabetes mellitus, flatfoot and a number of other diseases.

• Disorders of the motor centers of the brain
Such convulsions are observed during a stroke (at the onset of the disease or during the recovery period), during alcohol intoxication.

Why do cramps happen at night?
Such a question arises quite often. Indeed, why do we experience these painful sensations during a night’s sleep? The fact is that during sleep the activity of many organs (but not all) decreases. Muscles also rest and relax. If for some reason the blood supply to the leg muscles is insufficient, then the lack of oxygen in a horizontal position increases, which leads to seizures.

Seizures at night – what to do?
The main thing is to stay calm. Yes, it is a sharp, often unbearable pain. But such states do not threaten life. Here are tricks that can help relax a muscle and get rid of pain.

During cramps, knead foot
Stretch your leg (legs) (lying down, but you can sit on the bed) and pull your feet towards you. Rotate them in different directions, make a few flexions and extensions of the foot.

Try lowering your feet to the floor, stand up and walk around a bit.

Massage your sore muscles, you can prick her with a needle or pin.

When cramps occur regularly, you need to find the cause of this condition and, if possible, eliminate it.
